Why do people like dystopian stories? I watched a video of a rather well-known indie writer. She said that she likes dystopian stories because she wants to read about people who are assholes living in an asshole world. Or, something to that effect.
My current #WIP is based on a project that I started about 25 years ago. It was supposed to be a postapocolyptic story that would end on a note of the beginning of a utopia. I was in my mid20s and a sci-fi geek. I was steeped in the morality of the utopian worlds of Star Trek Next Generation and such. I was convinced that we could be better, if we only tried harder and gave more of ourselves. Or something. I’m not sure what I was smoking at the time.
I did it! With a little bit of revised goal setting I did it! There was no way I was going to be able to finish my original goal of 50k, but I was pretty sure I’d be able to get at least 5k and finish the first scene. I couldn’t write more because #momwriter life.
I had such great intentions for #campnanowrimo2021. I did. I really did. And then ... I got a little behind. Then I tried to catch up and I almost did. Then I missed 4 days because shot 2 of the vaccine made me ill. Very, very ill. Then ... mommyhood stuff. And now here we are. So. I re-evaluated my goal. Reduced it from 50k to 5k. If I get to 5k before the end of April I may increase it. My thinking is that I have more done than I had before. So yay me! I could beat myself up and say — why can’t I get more done. Or I could look at what I did get done and under the circumstances I got it done and say to myself — well done lady. Since I do better with praise rather than criticism, I’m going with the well done lady. My dystopian sci fi novel will get done. Uuuuugh Day 7. I’m only 4500 words in. My 3 year old insisted I take a few days off in there. Failure to comply was met with the toddler smash of the keyboard. Please tell me I’m not the only one .... so during NaNoWriMo 2020 I wrote the outline for this project. Between then and now I was able to complete Act 1. So yay. I’m still on scene 1. I write by scenes. It’s how my mind works. So there you go. Anyway. It’s taken me 4500 to get to the part where I had planned on writing in my outline. My alpha reader says it’s pretty good stuff so it may survive the great purge (you know. Editing). We shall see. But oh my goodness. I think that the part I’ve added may be necessary for like world building and character development or whatever. We will see. Sadness. So for 2 days I’ve barely had a chance to hold my phone, while I sit with my 3 year old and watch the Mickey Mouse club. I dare not try to get out the laptop lest his holy lordship might do the toddler smash on the keyboard. So I have no updates.
